Flowers of the Field

*** Nine weeks in the Specialist Classical Chart Top 10 ***

The CLC’s most recent recording for Naxos, featuring performances by Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons and baritone Roderick Williams, is an anthology of twentieth century British music on the themes of war and lost youth, set against a background of the English countryside and a centuries-old pattern of rural life. Includes the premiere recording of Finzi’s Requiem da Camera in its new completion by Christian Alexander: a beautiful and poignant setting of poems commemorating the Great War, it is the composer’s memorial to his mentor who died in 1915 and to countless contemporaries who lost their lives. Jeremy Irons provides the narration for Vaughan Williams’ haunting Oxford Elegy. The disc also includes English works by two composers and a poet for whom the Great War was catastrophic: The Trumpet, a setting of Edward Thomas’s poem by Ivor Gurney (premiere recording), and George Butterworth’s Shropshire Lad Rhapsody.

Hilary Davan Wetton conducts the City of London Choir with the London Mozart Players.

The disc was the highest new entry at no. 2 in the Specialist Classical Chart in November 2014 and then held the no. 1 position for a fortnight.
